presumably you mean from mail -> mutt.

That sounds like the line(s) in configure MAILER=NONE.

I suspect configure did not find a valid mailer when compiled.

Perhaps you need to redo the build with the symlink in place.
And then reinstall.

Don't forget to "make distclean" before redoing the configure.
