There is a tapetype program in the utils directory IIRC.  Turn off 
the drives hardware compression and leave it off.  Then run the 
tapetype program against the drive with a tape that you can afford 
to erase.  It will spit out when its done, the capacity of the 
drive in a format that can be copy/pasted into your amanda.conf.

It will take quite some time on a 40gig tape, so starting it at 
bedtime seems like a good idea.  When you have a valid tapetype, 
please post it to this list so that someone can add it to the 
distributions examples.
