Just to clarify this statement: “Depending on old OS and new OS, you may want
to upgrade before or after the move.”

You will want to move from v6 to v6, then upgrade to v7

Or upgrade to v7, and move from v7.

I have seen cases where the new OS didn’t support v6, so they upgrade on the
old machine to v7 first, then migrate to a new machine running V7. Also seen
cases where the old OS didn’t support v7, so move from v6 to v6 on the new
machine, then upgrade to v7.

Because the upgrade and the move are two separate tasks, they don’t need to
happen at the same time. The order will depend on the environment.

Marc...

Hi John,

You are actually doing two separate tasks. Moving to a different machine and
upgrading the software. You have to do one before the other. Depending on old
OS and new OS, you may want to upgrade before or after the move.

The actual move is very similar to a DR exercise. At a very high level:

- install OS

- install Soectrum Protect

- restore DB

- swing storage from old to new server

Subject: [ADSM-L] TSM 6 to 7 Upgrade questions

Hello,
im planning to upgrade a clients TSM 6.3 server to TSM 7.1 on new hardware.
However the documentation I found
(https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSGSG7_7.1.3/srv.install/t_srv_upgrade63_71.html)
only provides a way to make an in-place upgrade. But I need to move to new
hardware. Is there a way to extract the database and import it on the new
system, like it was for TSM 5 to 6 upgrade? Can i use the v5 dsmupgrd utilities
to extract the TSM 6 database to Tape, and then TSM 7 dsmserv insertdb to
import the database again?
Best Regards,
John
