Hi list,

Does someone still using B/A Client to backup VM at file level using the off 
host capabilities of VADP ?

In a customer environment, VMMAXPARALLEL is inefficient when backup up at file 
level but works fine when backup up at VM level.

Hi all,

Reading "TSM Client VMware On-Host and Off-Host Backup Requirements" technote 
(1394300), I understand that VMware Off-host file-level backup uses the VMware 
vStorage APIs since TSM 6.2 B/A client (see at the en of this mail).

TSM 6.4 B/A client introduces a new option named VMMAXPARALLEL that allows to 
backup 1 to many (50) VMware virtual machines in parallel using a single 
"Backup VM" command (or a single schedule associated with only one data mover).

This new feature is designed to be usefull when using TSM for VE, but should 
also work with the standard B/A client (the official documentation is not so 
clear). 

So I've tested it with VMBACKUPType=FUllvm and it's working as expected.

But, VM are backed up sequentially with VMBACKUPType=FIle. So the only solution 
I see is to do as we were used to do : configuring multiple data movers.

Any suggestions ?

Note : B/A Client used : 6.4.0.11 and 6.4.1.0, vSphere is 5.1.

PS : I know that TSM for VE should be helpfull but it needs to be bought before 
to be used ;-)

Both full-vm and file off-host backups are supported with the VMware vStorage 
APIs for Data Protection (VADP) with:

    6.2.2, 6.2.3, and 6.2.4 TSM Windows x32 and x64 Backup-Archive clients
    6.3 TSM Windows x32 and x64 Backup-Archive clients
    6.4 TSM Windows x32 and x64 Backup-Archive clients

3 6.2 client Off-host full-machine backup requires VCB Framework 1.5 Update 1 
or 2. However, Off-host file-level backup uses the VMware vStorage APIs for 
Data Protection and does not require any additional VMware software.
