Do you know what happened to the F: drive? It must have been there at one time 
(or so it would seem) and some installed product used it to store a driver file 
(perhaps some kind of drive encryption software?).

You can confirm that VSS knows about this file by using the diskshadow utility 
to list the detailed writer information. "vssadmin list writers" is not 
sufficient for this.

1. Open a Windows command prompt (cmd.exe).

2. Type the following command and press <ENTER>:

   diskshadow /L disksh.out

3. You will now see the diskshadow command prompt. Type this command and press 
<ENTER>:

   list writers detailed

4. You will see a bunch of info fly by, it will take several seconds. Then you 
will see the diskshadow command prompt again. Type this command and press 
<ENTER>:

   exit

5. You will now be back at the C: prompt in the Windows command shell. Use 
notepad to view the disksh.out file:

   notepad disksh.out

Search for truecrypt-x64.sys. You should be able to see the entry on the F:
drive. While you are in there, check for any other entries on the F: drive.

To work around this:

Go to http://support.microsoft.com and search for KB article 980794. There you 
can find a hotfix you can install on Windows 2008 R2. The basic remediating 
steps are:

1. Install the hotfix (will require a reboot).

2. In registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\Control\SystemWriter, set value 
ExcludedBinaryPaths to the missing file (f:\truecrypt-x64.sys). You might need 
to add additional files if there were any others on F: (from the diskshadow 
output above).

Once you have done this, perform the first set of steps 1-5 above. This time 
you should no longer see the truecrypt-x64.sys file. Then try the system state 
backup again.

Note that the above is really only a circumvention to a symptom; the real 
problem is related to whatever application owns that file and is probably an 
uninstall issue. Besides the above action, you should try to find out the 
origin of this file, how it was installed, and how it was removed. It could be 
that this problem stems from an incomplete removal of the application that owns 
that file. The application vendor might also be able to help you do a complete 
clean-up of the application.
