they must have a very compelling argument for wanting one huge LUN rather than 
say 6 to 12 smaller LUNs. This must have something to do with the inability to 
cut up the data.

At any rate, no matter how many or few files are on that LUN, DR within 24 
hours will only happen if they have some sort of replication. This means that 
they'll be using the backups only for the small disasters.

With tricks like 'virtualmountpount' and incremental by date you may be able to 
run the backups in a more or less timely fashion, even with large amounts of 
files. Now, if they just put on 2 huge files, that would be a challenge. Will 
they ever be 'static' long enough to stream to tape? Or in any usable state if 
you back them up using 'shared dynamic' and then need to restore?
