Richard,

Application was doing archive/retrieves not backup/restore so error on my 
description of the issue.

I just found the UNIX client option archsymlinkasfile and just tested changing 
the from the default value of yes to no.  Re-archived the jre and restored and 
the symbolic links are indeed now symbolic links and the application works.

It is common processing for TSM to backup and restore symbolic links as 
symbolic links.  If you have details on exactly what the application person did 
for backups and the restoral, feel free to post.
