No on the tapes - all backups go to a disk LZ first.

Yes, there should have been plenty of free disk space in the LZ.

Checking the server logs, I see a scheduled migration that finished long
before this incident occurred and another automatic one kicking off this
morning at 2:40 due to 85% filled.

Just a guess here...
Are these backups being sent directly to tape?
If not, was there enough "disk" space to hold all of the transaction logs
intended for backup?
If a tape was involved, were there tape drives available at the time of
backup?
