Hi Nicholas!
1) I know, but it has always worked this way and it does still work for
the other TSM instance running on the same host!
2) Because we use multiple libraries and drives. In fact it's an AIX
cluster which runs two TSM instances on every node. Since it's a HACMP
cluster, one cluster node should be able to run all four TSM's and thus
all libraries and all drives should be available on both the HACMP
nodes. To be able to see which tape device belongs to which library
device in AIX, we decided to use this naming convention. Since the SCSI
id is a unique parameter which can be queried from AIX, it can be used
for automating (read scripting) the renames.
3) Each library contains 30 drives. If a host adapter dies, it will be
replaced by a new one. I have to re-zone (it's fiber channel attached)
all the drives and recreate the tape drives on the host and update them
in TSM. It's all scripted to make no mistakes and to fix it a.s.a.p.
Kind regards,

Confusing!!

1. In UNIX, special characters are reserved for special functions and
special care must be taken to not have these characters interpreted
during
code execution. As a result, using UNIX specific device names as names
for
your TSM resources is asking for trouble!
2. Why aren't you using some mnemonic names that make sense to humans
such
as IBM3584, or DRIVE1, DRIVE2, etc.?
3. Why would you have written a script to do something that is done so
infrequently? How many times a day do you rename you libraries and
drives?

Regards,

Nicholas
