I'd love to know how you'd mount a reiserfs on AIX :P or even a UFS on
AIX. This is a very broad statement. In some cases this might work, in
most it won't.

possible, so I would think it could be done for tape. We have swung
disk
storage from hpux/vxvm/vxfs/oracle systems to aix/vxvm/vxfs/oracle
systems
to migrate from hpux to aix. You have to run some utilities on vxvm
and
oracle to do it, but they run in just a few min - no oracle export/
import
required.

Oracle! What does oracle have to do with TSM? (yes I know you can
backup Oracle database to TSM).

Andy,

I admit that I have never actually tried to do this. The furthest I
got
was talking to TSM Support and Development, a couple of years ago,
and they
indicated that this was not supported. I was told at that time that
different platforms write tapes differently. Hearing that it was not
supported, I was not willing to bet the enterprise on an unsupported
process, even if it appeared to work. I try to avoid those kind of
time
bombs.

IBM: If this could actually work for certain platform migrations, it
would
be useful to the user community to actually support something like
this. I'm sure there are many installations out there that have
reason to
change OS platforms over the years, and would want to do so without
exporting/importing ALL of their data.

make
some off-site copies of these LAN-free tapes.

Tapes are written in different formats on different platforms, so the
answer to your question is "no". You would have to export all of
the data
from Windows and import to AIX, not just the database.

No, I'm not from development, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn
Express
last
night!

Could someone from development please comment - since the database

TSM

to a
TSM
server on for example, AIX by restoring the database and then
updating
any
tape device names in the path definitions?
