There are a lot of issues with VSS backups for system state - even apply
the 3 VSS fixes you need to apply does not guarantee you will get a 100%
reliable system state backup.

My recommendation is to apply the hotfixes for sure, BUT also to set up
a ntbackup schedule task on your server to run a systemstate backup to
flat file each day, then have TSM also back that up

Yes it is double handling, but seriously, the time you will need the
system state backup is when you are practically doing a bare metal
restore / recovering a dead system - and in those instances, I would
rather have more system states available to choose from than less /
none.

Tim,
You might want to take a look at MS KB940184 - it deals with the VSS
errors.
Deleting the registry key mentioned in this KB article and restrting the
client did the trick for us.

Adam

We use it on hundreds of servers with no problems. We have seen
problems caused by the infamous DRM registry key and VSS but most
problems have been fixed with newer clients and Windoz patches.

On our AD servers, we are using NTBACKUP because M$ says that is the
*ONLY* acceptible/sanctioned backup/restore utility but still backup the
rest of the system with TSM.

[ADSM-L] TSM systemstate backups or NTBACKUP

Is anyone using the Windows NTBACKUP to backup Windows servers
SYSTEMSTATE instead of relying on using TSM to backup the system state.

I am always running into issues with some servers not able to get a
successfull SYSTEMSTATE backup via TSM

Latest clients have been Windows 2003 servers at 5.5.0 level

If someone is how are you scheduling the NTBACKUP ?
