During our audit, I was commissioned to perform an exhaustively thorough
search of the current backup vendors out there, and I included VTL and
de-dupe technologies, etc. NBU or CommVault were a couple I was looking
strongly at. Our true-up on licensing was THE #1 reason, as it shot a lot of
our dollar figures way up. But truly, it's not like other products' licensing
models are head and shoulders above TSM. It's management from the local level
that TSM does not provide, and most of the other products I looked at do
provide that within their product. And I did not appreciate the countless
times I had to revise the spreadsheet the auditors asked to be provided, even
though with each revision, I provided them with what was asked. I mean TSM
already retrieves a lot of information from a clients host machine now. Can't
they do anything with that and implement it into a near-future version of
TSM?

BTW, my company decided to invest in our TSM environment instead, but I would
have been fine with moving at the time. I was still hot under the collar. :)

A VTL vendor said he is seeing a number of mid-sized businesses
migrating from TSM to NBU (Symantec). Do you think this is true? My
concern is that the pool of support techs will shrink and put us in a
bind.
