We're about to do the same thing.  The approach I'm taking is a phased
upgrade.  I'm going to upgrade all the 5.2 clients to 5.3 (because you
can still backup reliably with 5.3 client to 5.2 server) then upgrade
the server to 5.4 or 5.5.x then upgrade the clients to 5.5 to get
everything up to the right level.

I remember seeing a matrix in one of the server readme files, or on the
IBM doc site.  I remember reading that the highest reliable client for
backups for 5.2 was 5.3.x
