Thanks, Bill! That's great stuff. It's good to see that they see dedupe
as a key feature. As he says, it won't benefit TSM customers as much as
others, but it will still benefit them. It's interesting to see that
they're going to do server-side dedupe first. They'll already have that
with the TSM VTL when they release their dedupe version, and that's
likely to be released first. I guess the idea is to give you dedupe
without having to buy a VTL.
>From a purely educational perspective, there's a lot of good info in
there just about dedupe, but the preso does describe dedupe as if it's
synonymous with hash-based dedupe. That is actually only one three
methods of deduping. To see a description of all three methods, check
out the other dedupe presentation at the same conference:

Thanks again for the link. Good stuff.

Curtis,
the Oxford 2007 presentations are available at
http://tsm-symposium.oucs.ox.ac.uk/2007contributions.html
Review the ones by Dave Cannon and Freddy Saldana, they are very good
with lots of information about possible future tsm features.

Really! What did they say? They've been rather tight-lipped elsewhere.

There are actually quite a few de-duping storage products on the
market now. IBM also discussed TSM-based dedup possibilities at the
Oxford TSM Symposium a couple of months ago.
