I´ll add to the discussion with a few questions of my own, though not with
scope to a specific vendor:

How did those who are using a VTL instead of random/sequential disk size
your environment? Not talking about a disk-only solution, tape for longer
term storage and clients performing to serve the tape drives such as SAP
and TSM for SAN would still serve tape directly. Migration of data to
physical tape would still be performed.
Is there any valid "best practice" ratio of amount of data/day to
VTL-capacity out there? No magic number, just looking for experience in the
field...

Why am I asking? We are currently running sequential disk mirrored over
DWDM on SATA, client backup performance is ok, backend processing of backup
stg and migration are becoming a pain due to rather sluggish streaming
performance moving TB´s to high-performance tape.
