John,

I had the situation (actually do not remember which) when I changed device
name from \\.\ChangerN to lbX.X.X.X (for drives - the same) - it solved all
of my problems. I mean in this case IBM library.
Probably it will helps you also.

Thanks.

Best regards,

Igor Yakovenko

John, good day,

could you print here information about paths from TSM to your library
and drives (q path ... f=d)?

Best regards,

Igor Yakovenko

Forgive me if I am being dense, but I don't see what your suggestion has
to do with my problem. A Backup Volhist just copies the current volume
history off to a disk file, it doesn't have anything to do with updating
the actual inventory of the library. I tried it, though, and the symptom
doesn't change.

As I said in my email, an Audit Library works, and TSM can mount and
unmount tapes just fine, so I believe it's library inventory is
up-to-date.

IBM returned my call, and had me take down TSM, to see if I can move a
tape to the I/O door using the TS3310's web interface. When I did, I
got an error that it couldn't be done, and a message to the effect that
it might be because the backup application using the library prevented
it. But TSM was down, so how could that be?

IBM had me reboot the library. After it came backup up, I could move
tapes to the I/O door using the TS3310's web interface, and thought,
hurray, I am finished. But I brought TSM back up, and I still got the
same symptom as before. So I took TSM back down, and I tried to move
the tape using the TSM3310 web interface, and I got the same error as I
describe above.

I am more stumped than ever. All I can think is that perhaps when TSM
first comes up it puts some sort of lock on the I/O door, but if it did,
how come it can check things in OK, but not check them out? An
accidental lock left on would prevent checkins, too.

I still suspect a problem in the library, somewhere, but I can't see
where. IBM had me use ITDT (IBM tape diagnistic tool) to generate some
dumps and send them up to them. I will post the results if it turns out
to be interesting or instructive.

Check dsmserv.opt to verify:
VOLUMEHistory /tsm/server/vol.history
and then use "backup volhist" command.

Try checking out a volume.

Greetings,
We just installed a new TS3310 tape library on a Windows
2003
server running TSM 5.3.4.0. We configured library with all devices and
slots in one partition. The library and drive drivers installed fine,
and the library and paths defined to the TSM server without a hitch.
The strange symptom is, we can label and checkin tapes to
the library, but we can't check them out again. We receive ANR8942E,
telling us it couldn't move the tape volume from the original slot to
slot 16.

They also checkin or label successfully from other slots, too. Once
the tapes are checked in, TSM can mount and umount them with no problem.
But TSM can't check anything out. A Show Slots gives us:

which looks like it can see the 18 I/O slots just fine.

We have an identical library on another TSM server that I think is setup
identically. I set them both up myself, and did the other one just a
couple months ago. They are both running the same library and drive
firmware, 320G.GS006 and 69U2, respectively.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
