Hi All,

We have decided not to go with dynamic backups can't risk the problems,
and unfortunately
excluding the Groupwise data from backups and shutting GroupWise down
are not options either. As
for using the ST. Bernard OFM that would be up the the clients
management team if they want to
spend the money to purchase it. Again this issue just started up again
when the Novell client
upgraded to GroupWise 7. We are trying to come up with another solution
if that's possible,
It would be nice if there was a TDP for Novell GroupWise or if TSM 5.4
had a fix but I can't find any.

Again thanks for your responses!

Tim

You can do dynamic backups if you're willing to live with the possibility that the
resultant "fuzzy" backups may or may not restore properly. This is not a
recommended procedure.

If that's not an option, you can one of three things:
exclude the GroupWise data from backups
shut GroupWise down, do the backups, and then bring GroupWise up via a batch
file
use an open file manager like St. Bernard to cache the open files during
backups

Off-hand, I would say to (a) check spelling of the parameter, and (b) make
sure the value is in the documented range. Also, (c) check the
serialization setting in the copy group to make sure it is SHRSTATIC
(DYNAMIC or SHRDYNAMIC *not* recommended, make sure you read the reference
info for these settings if you use them!!!!) If serialization is STATIC,
then the client will only try to back the file up once.

Of course, I can only guess; the actual contents of the dsm.opt file and
the output that complains about the option would have been helpful. ;-)

General unsolicited thoughts: I do not know what these files are, but if
this is a production database system, make sure that the traditional TSM
incremental backup method is sufficient for restoring the database files.
Also consider shutting down the database engine prior to the backup, and
restarting when the backup completes.

Andy

Hello All,

I am seeing the following messages appear in our TSM reporter activity
log for a Novell client
They are appearing during a Novell clients incremental backup everynite
now. When the Novell admin
client tried loading the the changingretries pararmeter in the dsm.opt,
dsmc rejected that as an
invalid option. According to the Netware Install guide he should be able
to boost the value
in the changingretries parameter. Has anyone ran into this type issue
before?
