Interesting approach Paul. (i.e. Why didn't I think of that?) Will you
just do a weekly backup to the litigation server, or something like that?
Perhaps I can move to a similar design...

We will use this separate TSM server for two purposes:

1. To freeze a copy of existing backup and archive data:
   export node <nodename> toserver=<litigationserver>
The litigation server would have one domain with one management
class which basically causes nothing to expire. We probably would
not run expiration on this server either, and only remove data via
delete filespace after the litigation has completed.

2. To retain backups indefinitely going forward. We may or may not
start with the exported node from step 1, above. For nodes in this
situation, we would probably run two backups from the node: 1 to our
production server, with normal expiration policies, and the 2nd to
our litigation server, which retains inactive versions
indefinitely. If the database size of the litigation server starts
getting too large, we'll just start an additional image.

If this becomes an enduring requirement, consider the IBM System
Storage Archive Manager product. Regulatory requirements sometimes
demand a solution more stringent than TSM itself.

I did look into this, and it's an interesting product. Basically
it's TSM with a few bells and whistles that prevent you from deleting
archive information, except in a very controlled way. Unfortunately,
it does not seem to handle backup data, so it didn't seem like a good
fit for us. It may work for your situation, however. It's worth
taking a look at.
