Thank you Richard, but my primary concern is that contradictory
advice was published by IBM within a month. It is hard enough for
us veterans, who started long ago with ADSM, to design efficient

IBM at minimum clouds the issue and at worst will lead some of the
less seasoned astray.

One of the TechNotes is wrong, or both are misleading. Which is it?

Orville -

Both Technotes are "correct", but 1240913 is misleading in that fails
to describe the conditions under which it will be correct...which is
when the data-rich directories mingle within the same set of volumes
being used for the files restorals; otherwise, the directories are on
unrelated volumes, which then represent superfluous, time-wasting
mounts to recover just directories - which are in among unrelated
data, making for a lot of repositioning within each volume.

Each Technote page has a rating and feedback area. Customers should
utilize that to convey the value of the information to the
originators, to assure that Technotes remain understandable to us and
convey all that they should. Those of us who have dealt with other
vendors find IBM's Technotes to be a treasure trove of useful
information. (Some of it should really be in the manuals, in
context, as the manuals are incomplete and somewhat vague when
deprived of the details which the Technotes provide.)
