The resulting line on AIX should look something like this (works for me
anyway): 

dsmsrv:2:once:/usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/rc.adsmserv
>/var/tsm/tsmserv.log 2>&1

It's probably a good idea to let this be the last line in /etc/inittab.

Larry - Review your /etc/syslog.conf file...

The 5.3 AIX level may be more stringent about its historic contents, or
the AIX 5.3 install may have changed something in it.
It sounds like there is an asterisk in a Priority position in the file.
