Hello Geoff,

With the 3584 there are two methods.
Without the ALMS feature, each virtual library has a defined set of slots
set aside for it. The slots for the virtual library have to all be in one
contiguous range of slots.
With the ALMS feature each virtual library is defined with a quota and the
library keeps track of the location of each tape and maps the physical slot
address to a virtual address for the virtual library. You can change the
quota on the fly. There are a set of rules to map tape volsers prefixes into
virtual libraries.

With the latest level of firmware, the ALMS feature includes VIO which
virtualizes the io/station.
So if you put tapes into the io/station the robot will move them to slots.
It will do this up to a site defined max, per virtual library, which has a
limit of 255. The robot moves two tapes at a time, using both grippers. The
tapes in slots are in a virtual io/station to the host software. When the
host software does an inventory the tapes are logically moved from the
virtual slots to virtual slots. No physical movement.

On checkout of a series of tapes, if the io/station is full, the tapes are
moved from virtual slots to virtual io/station slots. When the io/station is
emptied and the door is closed the library moves another io/station set of
tapes to the physical io/station.

I'm wondering if someone can tell me how these 2 libraries differ as it
relates to how the library knows what slot a tape is in. I know in the
3494
there is a library manager but unless I've missed something I don't see
that
type of unit in a 3584. Does the TSM server keep this information local to
the server?

Thanks,
