Gary - This is an old chestnut, which has been discussed before.

Having -DELetefiles blow away directories is a Bad Idea.

Presently the only fix has been to logon onto the client after the
archive + manually delete the empty file structure from the client.

Or a chaser schedule could run a client command to do that.
I would make it an OS script which thoroughly assured that the
directory structure was indeed empty before proceeding.
