O.K. folks, this is not just another 6/8 char question! This is new information
(and questions) that show methods have changed.
I have TSM server 5.2.5.0 (yes it's got problems and I am going
to 5.2.6.0 Monday). Running on AIX 5.2 ML3 platform. 3584
library SAN attached with LTO1, 2 and now 3, tape drives - all in
one logicial library. Atape driver is 9.3.5.0. Library firmware
is 5050, just upgraded all for LTO3 tapes - and WORM tapes
in a few weeks.
I have used 6 char since we got library 3 years ago. When I labeled
my first five LTO3 tapes (the non-WORM tapes) TSM saw the
full 8 chars - with the "L3" on the end! I said what? I then labeled
a few new LTO1 tapes and they showed only 6 chars!
So, in my research this is what I have found:
1. Per the 3584 Operator Guide GA32-0468-01 published
March 2005, Chap 3 page 129, states that the 6/8 char reporting
can ONLY be changed through the WEB Tape Library Specialist
and not through the Operator Panel! (No idea what library
firnware this change came in).
I used the Web and it is there and doesn't mention
anything about the different LTO classes. Still set to 6 char.
2. I see that on AIX through smit --> Devices --> Tape Drive,
Then select Change/Show and then your Medium Changer,
The last paramter on the Change screen says:
"TSM Bacrcode Length for Ultrium 1/Ultrium 2 Media"
and 6 or 8 is the choice!
What about Ultrium 3?
Questions:
Is it now that LTO3 tapes ONLY report 8 chars and you can't
select 6 chars? But can still select 6/8 on LTO1 and 2?
Im not actually using LTO3 tapes yet, so I can change it
if there is a way to!
Oh yes, my LTO3 WORM tapes have "LT" on the end
of barcode label. I wonder what happens when I label
them! I will wait for definitive answer as they are WORM!
I bet 3584 is not the only library with these changes!
