Lindy a few more thoughts on this:

Can you write to the tape drive with tar? If so the problem may be with the
mksysb utility itself. I have seen the mksysb utility fail before because
someone had deleted the symbolic link to the kernel. This in turn caused the
failure of the mkszfile utility and hence failed the mksysb operation. It
could be something similar.

I assume you are doing this all as the root user?

I realise this is the ADSM-L and not AIX so I wont go any further except to
say that you may need to involve Call-AIX at some point. The fact that an
operation fails due to what apparently seems to be something so simple may
be indicative of something deeper down.

Lastly you may want to install the latest ML or this months fixes.

Have you done all the normal AIX checking using the following commands:

lsdev -Cctape (Check if the tape drive is available and not defined) errpt
-a |grep rmt (check to see if the tape drive has had any errors) fuser
/dev/rmt2 (to see what, if any other process is using the device
already)

Tried another tape cartridge?
Checked the current tape WriteProtect tab?

I have tried to do a mksysb backup of my aix5.2 tsm server 5.2 to tape and
I
keep getting the following error:-

0512-017 mksysb: Cannot write to the device /dev/rmt2.
                 Either write protected or in use.

I have tried to delete tape devices and only configure the dat drive but
with no success. Is there any suggestions:-


The tape is fine, no problems with tape or tape drive...


Please help....I need to do an upgrade of db2 on that system and therefor
need to backup it up first....
