I am currently trying to backed up a directory with about 3 million

would I set a trace for this...

Provide us with the error indication you are experiencing.
Tell us what kind of TSM operation is being performed (command
string literal, GUI operation, etc.)

A directory containing 3 million files is absurd to start with
(unless you really mean a meta directory with a tree of subdirs).
If it is actually millions of files within a single directory,
get the owner to render that rational, with subdirectories.

You may well be running out of virtual storage space if performing
an incremental backup, in which case that client system needs a
vstorage boost.
