I would create all new definitions for the 1000 library. Once you're up to
TSM 5.2.3 level, the drives and library have the serial number as part of
the definition. If you point the same library/drive to a different physical
drive, you get error messages that it's not the same device becuase the
serial numbers are different. I would just:

1. Define Library Scalar_1000 libt=scsi
2. define path for the Scalar_1000 library
3. Define drive Scalar_1000 drive1 for each drive
4. Define paths for each drive.
5. Update existing device class that points to the Scalar_100 to the new
Scalar_1000 library
6. You can bulk load all the tapes in the library, then just do a CHECKIN
SEARCH=YES.

Now you can go back and delete the library/drives/paths for the old library.

If you are replacing the library and it turns out to have the same device
name (lbx.x.x.x), then it gets a bit more complicated. You will need to
define a temporary library to point your devclass to while you delete and
redefine the real library.

1. Define library manual libt=manual
2. upd devc <devclass> library=manual

3. Now delete the paths/drives/library of the Scalar_100
4. Define the new Scalar_1000 library/drives/paths
5. upd devc <devclass> library=Scalar_1000
6. checkin your tapes.

If you want to name the new library the same as the original library, you
can follow the above steps.

Dirk,
If you are using the same media type, yes you can place the existing
media in the new Library. First, you will have to define the new library
and update the device class definition to reflect the new library. After
loading your tapes in the library you will need to perform a library
audit.

Subject: Library upgrade question

Hi,

we are going to exchange our Adic Scalar 100 for
a Scalar 1000, soon.
Would it be possible to simply move the DLT tapes
from the old library to the new one, if we keep
the names of the library and the drives in TSM
(doing an audit library afterwards)?
Or do we have to connect both libraries to migrate
the data to the new one (what will take some time
for 5 TB)?
What's the best way to keep the old data?

Thanks in advance,
