Hi,
We've been taking snapshot backups of Netware clients for couple of
years now, on different flavors of Netware 5 and TSM 5.x

Most of our Netware data runs in a Netware cluster, and is stored on HP
disks (Compaq storageworks when we bought them) and the data is mirrored
between two data centres.

We take backups using the snapcopy function of the HP HSG disk subsystems
to create a virtual copy of all the data. We then run TSM clients on a
dedicated Netware server against the virtual copy to move the data to tape.
This effectively means that we have three copies of the data on disk, a
primary, a remote mirror and a backup copy. It also means that we do the
TSM backups from the virtual disks without affecting users on the primary
disk.

However, to be honest we did not implement this because we wanted to take
snapshot backups. We did this because TSM 5.1 and earlier did not support
Netware Clustering and failover, and the snapcopy / dedicated Netware
server was the only way we could get this to work. The setup has worked
reasonably well, we do get the occasional snapcopy failure. Now TSM 5.2
does support Netware clustering, we are reviewing the whole process.

Tim,

I'd be interested to hear if you ever accomplished this and what you found
was the best way to do it? I'd like to do weekly snapshots of a fairly
large volume (250gb) with many many files. This is mainly to speed up
restore of the entire volume.

Does the Netware client support image backups? If anyone has any other
suggestions for backing up a large Netware volume with LOTS of files,
please let me know.
