Only if you want to use JFS2 filesystems, than 64-bit kernel is mandatory.

Otherwise, there is nothing from running your 32-bit client on a 64-bit
kernel. On the other hand, if you have the opportunity, go for 64-bit
kernel, JFS2 and 64-bit TSM client.

You must run in 64bit mode, you do not have a choice with aix 5.2
