Your points are well taken, but 1TB tapes are evolving because of the
need for:
1) high-capacity cartridges for machine image backups and large file
backups
2) long-term archival storage
3) collocated on-site data
4) offsite libraries attached by broadband WAN
TB tape cartridges are not for every day needs for everyone. My ideal
high-capacity backup infrastructure is a local disk farm (no tape
library) in conjunction with an offsite LTO2 (or TB volume capacity)
collocated library attached with high-capacity WAN connectivity. This
not only speeds up restores, it also eliminates the need for tape
shuffling and vaulting expenses.
