Tap,

curious as I am I checked the same for my small environment :
dual wintel IBMx342, 2 drives LTO stackable IBM/Overland Library/30 Slots, 2
manual DLT drives

and my results for on-line data are about
        70$ / GB
PLus Off-site Backupcopy is about 10$/GB.

Once the library will be full (I consider 50% of physical capacity to be
full)
the price will fall to about 35$/GB,plus 7$ /GB for Off-Site

when later expanded to 4 LTO drives/60 slots / 3 manual DLT drives / tsm
library modul/
the price will be about 30$/GB plus 6$ /GB for Off-Site

Alternative expansion to 4 LTO/Drives/90 slots
would reduce the on-line costs to about 20$/GB.

Costs from above does NOT include labor costs (installation, configuration,
test, check, documentation)
The GB is sum of all active and passive file versions and archives.

John,

You got me thinking with this one, so I calculated it for our company.

Cost per online GB = $58

Cost per total GB (includes tapes in vault and export tapes) = $21

Those numbers are derived from capital and media cost of our current
system + one year hardware maintenance. It does not include our test
system, equipment that has been retired, or media that has been retired.

Equipment: 2-way 6H1, 3583-L72, 3575-L18, 3575-L12, HP 4/40, Compaq MSL
5026
Data: 7.2 TB online, 19.5 TB total.

        Subject: Backup cost per GB?

Perhaps this has been a discussion on the list before and I am searching
the
archive. (Been searching for two days now!). Have there been any studies
by
industry experts on the cost of data backup per GB? Are there any
guidelines
to follow to be sure a proposed solution is within industry standards?

I am trying to upgrade our TSM environment with more horsepower,
throughput
and storage capability. I need to arm myself with this type of information
for managements review.
