I've been running a partitioned 3494 with shared 3590s for more than three
years, which is about three years too long. My AIX admin and I worked out the
details for using one of our AIX boxes as a Licensed Library Manager and had
set the date for installation and cutover. On the Friday before, we lost that
box for six hours, which would have meant, if it were the following Friday, we
would have been without tape access for six hours on all systems.

So back to the drawingboard. I think my latest scheme is feasible, but would
appreciate feedback.

The plan is to get aa small Intel box, maybe even one of the Wal-Mart $299
specials, and put LINUX on it. This would server as the TSM Licensed Library
Manager as well as the Enterprise console. It doesn't have to be a big system,
not doing any backups, so storage requirements are minimal. As long as it can
make the necessary network connections to the 3494 and the system
administration, me, it really doesn't have to do anything else. It's still a
single point of failure, but since the machine isn't running a heavy load, it
should be safe from stress problems, only being down for necessary software
upgrades.

Anyone see anything wrong with this?
