We had a similar quandry about a year ago, and decided to go with LTO and
an ADIC Scalar 10000. We're very happy with LTO. We went with LTO because
it seemed to be a half-generation ahead of AIT in their
roadmap/schedule. If AIT3 had come out the same time as LTO1, things might
have turned out differently. Sony seems to have recognized this and has
talked about SAIT, a half-inch cartridge form-factor that is helical scan
like AIT is. I think they hope to leapfrog LTO with it. Time will
tell. The advantages of LTO are wide-acceptance and use (especially in the
TSM community), and choice. There are 3 tape drive vendors competing,
which helps keep costs down and provides some choice between low-cost and
higher-reliability. The Scalar 10000 has also worked out very well for us.

Hope this helps.

Hi all,

we plan to set up an archiving-system with TSM.

Does anybody can give me some pros or cons for AIT3 versus LTO.
Can anybody tell me something about his experience with EDIC Scala 100 and
IBM 3583.

Thanks for any help
