I do neither. I define a separate node name for monthly backups, with
separate policy having the retention I wish. As licensing is NOT done by
the number of node names, but by processor, this should not require
additional licenses. The first backup is large, but subsequent backups
are much easier to take and have less impact on database size.

        Subject: Archive or Backupset

I have a new client with a requirement to keep monthly point in time
copies for
6 months.
The question is whether backupsets or archives are the best mechanism.
I am at TSM 4.2.2 os390
In my situation I have access to os390 dfhsm which means that I can
generate
backupsets to disk
and then use os390 dfhsm to migrate to tape and also to provide a copy of
the
tape to protect against media failure. So this means I do not have to
archive
to achieve media protection.
Also backupsets are a very small database overhead and you do not have to
retransmit the files over the network.
Against this backup sets only work at filespace level, but in this
instance only
very small amount of data on filespace does not require the 6 month
retention.
Also individual files are easier to recover from archives, but how often
do need
to do this?
So are backupsets a no brainer here?
I am interested in the recommendations of people who use both in a
production
environment.
Thanks
John
