Rube Goldberg was a comic strip long ago. Rube would build fantastically
complicated machines to do the simplest tasks. For example, to cook an egg
for breakfast he might have a string tied to an alarm clock that would open
a pull a lever when it rang to knock an egg into a chute in a hen house
which while rolling down would trip a lever to turn on the stove where the
egg would drop out of the chute into a pan so his egg would be ready to eat
when he got up. So a "Rube Goldberg" became an adjective for a machine or
process that was way over complicated to do a simple task. (:

      Take care,

Hi Richard,

---> ... but is awfully Rube Goldberg.

Is this something very American-specific or I just have a hard day so am
unable to understand :-)
