I always just send mail to "listserv AT vm.marist DOT edu" and do a
        set adsm-l nomail
that way the msgs don't come in while I'm away
then when I return I send "listserv AT vm.marist DOT edu" a msg
        set adsm-l mail
to turn things on again...
