I think two points need to be made clear before these questions can be
appropriately answered. There have been a few misconceptions about Tivoli.

1.) TSM should not be used as a BMR D/R product it's not sysback or a
Veritas product, although there are new Tivoli enhancements currently out
there for this it's not really meant to restore an entire O/S from failure.
It's primarily used for user data. Like if Donna looses her "phone.txt"
file. Another thing would be database restores it's also good for, if the
proper TDP or database procedures are in place for the backups of course.

2.) TSM is "incremental forever", which means that there is no such thing
as an INCREMENTAL backup which means TSM backs up data which has changed
since the last incremental backup not since the last FULL backup. TSM has
an option called: "OBSOLUTE" backups which is basically an archived marked
in the TSM database as a backup. Also a selective will backup everything at
one time as if it was a FULL. So the answer to that question is you could
use incrementals to restore an entire "filesystem" but keep in mind the
versioning while you do so a good restore command is always:

# dsmc restore "/full_pathname/*" -subdir=yes -inactive -replace=no = For
full restores, on a newly empty volume.

Due to the fact that we are moving to a new location and will not have
access to our ATL system, we are looking at changing the way we do backups.
In this new building we will have a new TSM server and a 3590 E11 attached
to it. As I said before, we will not have access to our existing TSM Server
nor the ATL library. We will have about 65 Clients to backup nightly. I
know that the first backup I run on the new server will backup everything.
We are looking into doing incremental backup Monday-Thursday and either a
Selective or Archive on a weekly starting on Fridays and letting it run for
how ever long it takes. And rotating the Incremental tapes every 5 weeks.
My question is that if we do a Selective or Archive backup, we'll we be
able
to use those tapes Plus the incremental to recover a server including the
OS. Will the Selective or Archive backup the System State information? if
the answer to the two questions is no, then what is my other options.

Thanks
