Hi.

We are running a rather back level collection of TSM software and are
hitting a problem with backing up one of our databases. We have an RS6000
S80 running several Oracle databases and a TSM Server, (note: it wasn't my
idea to put the TSM server on the same server as the databases and this is
getting rectified at the next upgrade). The smaller databases (up to ~200gb
in size each) backup without problems but the largest database (800gb)
fails.

The backup tends to fail doing a level 0 incremental (i.e. full) backup of
the database through RMAN via the TDP. There are no errors in the TSM
activity log, the dsierror.log or the dsmerror.log for that time period. In
the activity log it appears that sessions just stop coming in from the
Oracle backup and after a short pause start coming in for the next database
backup. There are no errors indicating either a communication timeout, i/o
error or a lack of mount points. The backup (last time) had been running
happily for 2 hours before it failed.

The TSM server also backs up a couple of large Domino servers and another
smaller Oracle server over a gigabit lan without problems.

The backup used to work perfectly until the DBAs upgraded Oracle on the
server from 8.1.6.2 to 8.1.7.0. They had a few problems with the upgrade
and ended up having to rebuild the RMAN database on that server. Has anyone
had this sort of problem or knows anything that can shed some light on it?

The error obtained is as follows:
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-03015: error occurred in stored script backup_db_level_0
RMAN-03006: non-retryable error occurred during execution of command: backup
RMAN-07004: unhandled exception during command execution on channel tape1
RMAN-10035: exception raised in RPC: ORA-00447: fatal error in background
process
RMAN-10031: ORA-19583 occurred during call to
DBMS_BACKUP_RESTORE.BACKUPPIECECREATE

The software in the environment is as follows:
AIX 4.3.3 ML8
Oracle 8.1.7.0
TSM Server 3.7.4.0
TDP for Oracle 2.1.0.9

Regards

Tim
