Remember, AIX supports mksysb.  So, for it to rebuild everything having the
volume group and logical volume group structure is necessary.  Solaris and
HP-UX are heading away from the traditional raw volumes as well.  With
virtual storage coming raw will be come a thing of the past.

The mainframe had a raw concept as well, but it went to volume grouping
about 10 years ago because of the manageability issues.  It is called System
Managed Storage, aka SMS.  The same will happen with UNIX.  It is just a
matter of time before the IO system of UNIX grows up and raw will be so
undesirable because of the benefits of non-raw you will be glad it is dead.

I agree the simplicity of raw makes it really desirable for things like
workstations, but it will be a thing of the past there as well.  Just time.

Thats what I was afraid of. Adding another layer of complexity and overhead.

Why can't AIX allow the use of the raw devices?
