Rajesh,

for LAN-free you will need SAN (you wouldn't be asking otherwise :-)
connectivity and TSM Storage Agent license on each node. Latter in
*latest* licensing scheme comes by purchasing ITSM eXtended Edition + ITSM
for SAN. In not so latest scheme ITSM Enterprise Edition is enough and
points scheme is wide enough discussed on this list. LAN-free works for
both direct-attached storage (local disks) or SAN storage.

For server-free things are more complicated. You will need SAN definitely
but with SAN Data Mover in it. It could be either Pathlight 5000 or IBM
San Data Gateway (OEM-ed Pathlight) or IBM SDG Router.
The license is uncertain question - in the redbook "ITSM v5.1 Technical
Guide" it is clearly described that no Storage Agent is involved in the
process. The ITSM server performs the operation and sends SCSI 3 XCopy
commands to the Data Mover. OTOH if we look at "TSM for Windows B-A
Clients Installation and User's Guide V5R1" (GC32-0788-00, note here
Tivoli omitted word IBM and is TSM instead of ITSM :-), Appendix B,
Server-free prerequisites - "To enable SAN-based server-free support, the
Tivoli Storage Manager Managed System for SAN feature must be installed
and configured on the Tivoli Storage Manager Windows server." !?! We have
to assume the Guide as more authorative than the redbook but you may
demand clear *written* answer from your Tivoli rep.
The last you need for server-free is a Windows 2000 (XP or .Net on the
way, do not dream about UNIX at the moment) box which can afford *image*
backup. Standard "progressive backup" can use LAN and LAN-free but not
server-free. Image backup can be used in conjunction with incremental (for
example image backup on weekends and incrementals on weekdays).

For the 3584 you will need either FC drives or SCSI drives connected
through IBM SAN Data Gateway (for example if you have existing library
SCSI-attached to the TSM server). Several things to consider here:
- you cannot use same SDG for disk and tape. It is rare but some companies
still do have IBM ESS E-models or F-models with SCSI and SDG. In such
situation I would recommend purchase of FC ports for ESS and reuse of SDG
for 3584.
- generally you cannot use same FC HBA for disk and tape and IBM does not
support this. I've made it work (and it works fine) for a customer but it
is still unsupported. If you have problems one of the first things IBM
will point the finger to is *single HBA*. So budget second HBA and be
happy if is not necessary (or purchase it to be sure)
- if neither 3584 nor ESS (if any) do have SCSI ports you still need IBM
SDG for Data Mover functionality. It will do the job through its FC ports
(Charlotte, thank you for your invaluable help on this topic).
- you will have to consider (somewhat) limited throughput of SDG FC ports
and the number of simultaneous SCSI 3 XCopy commands a SDG can process. If
your SAN will be too big and too many servers or too much data will be
backed up using server-free you may need more SDGs.
- server-free can work if the disks can be *uniquely* identified on the
SAN by serial number (not SCSI IDs/LUNs or SAN WWNs). If they cannot, the
SDG is unable to address them (by info sent from the server) and is unable
to understand which disk to use when performing SCSI 3 XCopy.

        Subject: SAN and TSM

I know this has been discussed before but I need some info.
We are in the early stages of implementing TSM on the new SAN environment.
What are the different components that we would need for a LAN free and
Serverless Backup?
Like San Client, Storage agent, etc, etc...
What needs to be done to use the Tape Drives which will be in the IBM3584
on the SAN (for Serverless backup)?

Any help is appreciated.
