How does Restore work when 'replace' option is provided?

                                OPTION                              CLIENT
SERVER

Eg.1 restore file A  ---          OVERWRITE                         delete
file A, then restore file A from Server ??? or

Eg.2 restore file A                OVERWRITE                        existing
file A, then images onto file A server ???


This makes difference for oracle restore (with quick I/O files) apparently


pls shed some light onto this
