Hi Sascha,

we had the same question a few months ago.
The network transfer rate doesnt tell you something about your network speed.
As far as I know the network transfer rate is calculated like this:

All bytes sent from the Node
----------------------------
session time

where the session time is the whole session time (include filespace scans;
media wait times; etc.)

Tivoli told us to look at the aggregated network transfer rate; this is the
rate the client needs to transfer the aggregates to the server...
Tivoli also told us to trace the sessions with the traceflag -perform to see
the performance of the session.

hope this helps ;)

Hi,

I just go this right out of the manual:

*network data transfer rate: *
The data transfer rate calculated by dividing the total number of bytes
transferred by the data transfer time. For example, the time spent
transferring data over the network

*aggregate data transfer rate:*
The data transfer rate is calculated by dividing the total number of
bytes transferred by the elapsed processing time.

My experience has shown that these definitions of these numbers are
accurate. However, I just recently posted a question (subject line was:
"Re: Antwort: Data transfer rates with TSM for OS/390") on this list
about a backup report that showed an aggregate rate greater than the
network rate which by the above definitions would be impossible.

I certainly have not done exhaustive research into this but I don't ever
remeber seeing this scenario. I have looked on all my clients here and
have not found it to be so.

I do agree the only good way to see the performance is thru trace,
because there you get to see where you are spending your time.
