Hey Fred,

TSM talks to the LMCPD (library manager control point daemon) which talks to
the library manager which queries the drive status through an artic
connection. It's important that the artic is online on the library manager,
or nothing will work.

Aix can access the drive through the scsi connection. This connection can
very well be OK, while the library manager cannot contact the drive.
Check the artic status on your LM.
Try connection using the mtlib command. like this -> aixhost:\>mtlib
-l/dev/lmcp0 -qD -f/dev/rmt3
The result should look like:

(rs6sv100-eb41010) /home/eb41010> mtlib -l/dev/magstar -qD -f /dev/rmt3
Device Data:
   mounted volser.............none.
   device category............012E
   device state...............Device installed in Library.
                              Device available to Library.
                              ACL is installed.
                              Auto Fill is enabled.
   device class...............3590-E1A
   extended device status.....00

If you don't get this, the artic will be offline. Get your IBM CE to set it
right.

Onderwerp: error definining a drive in a 3494 library after install

After an installation of a new tapedrive in a3494 library I got the
following errors.
Activity log:
                               DEFINE DRIVE 3494LIB drive3 DEVICE=/dev/rmt3
ONLINE=YES
08/08/02 14:07:28     ANR8779E Unable to open drive /dev/rmt3, error
number=22.
08/08/02 14:07:28 ANR8420E DEFINE DRIVE: An I/O error occurred while
accessing drive DRIVE3.

The tapedrive is installed and in 'available' status on AIX. Defining them
to TSM gives this errors. Does somebody recognize them and know what to do?
