Fran,
one parameter you can change is Bufpoolsize on the server. for  1GB of real
RAM you should put it  to 131072. the other thing is to turn compression
off, in a single client, fast client, fast server, fast network it gives
better performance.
then on the AIX server try
no -o rfc1323=1
no -o thewall=131072
no -o sb_max=1310720
use vmtune to view virtual memory settings. if the filesystem is jfs you
should put maxpgahead to maximum (-R256). stop virtual memory paging by
modifying minperm/maxperm parameters (default is -P80, lower it to -P50 but
watch minperm).

on the client check if compression actually makes files bigger, and check
how many retries there are when sending data to server. put TxnGroupMax to
the maximum (256) if retries are rare. you can raise TxnByteLimit (maximum
is 2097152). MoveBatchSize should be 1000, MoveSizeThresh 500 (2048 for TSM
5.1), set ExpInterval to 0.
