Sam,

I guess that means you pull tapes from your 3583. We don't. We set the
I/O drawer to storage and get the full 72 slots of capacity. The wierd
part is that when I check in the cleaning tape, I can reply to the request
to put the cleaning tape in the "I/O" slot and everything works OK, even
though that configuration doesn't have an I/O slot. TSM / 3583 finds the
cleaning tape in the slot where it's parked and checks it in normally.

I have reclamation set at 50% on all my primary tape pools; 60% for the
copypool.

The LTO library is collocated by node. What I find with the LTO is that
some of my nodes that send data to it are Oracle servers, and Oracle table
files compress very tightly. It is not unusual to see "350 GB" stored on
the LTO dedicated to an Oracle server. Reclaiming at 50% means it has to
move 175 GB to complete that reclamation. Takes a little while - our
system achieves 16 MB/s per library because each library is on one SCSI
adapter because all the server slots are filled.

Good luck.

I have a 3583 L72. I use the I/O door option so I only have 60 slots for
tapes.
Over the last year the slots have been filling and I can see, not too far
in the
future, all the slots will be populated and TSM will begin using the
"overflow
area" option. We have no 2nd/3rd shift operators, and I do most of the
TSM
'work' at night.

I currently have reclamation set to 65%. I question some of the policy
retention numbers. but may not be able to do anything with them
immediately.
What reclamation percentage seems reasonable here?...dropping to 55%-60%.
Change policy retention values would help some.

We migrated from a 3494 with lots of tapes to a small LTO.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
