What can you and can't you backup with server-free backups?

e.g. does it work on any platform? My guess is yes since it's more of a
copy of data between two SAN devices then something that involves the OS
directly.

But what about DB's and other applications like exchange? It doesn't
seem likely one can do a server free backup of a hot database offhand.
