our performance problem has been resolved.
We had to apply the latest maintenance for

bos.mp.4.3.3.79
bos.rte.libc.4.3.3.81
bos.net.tcp.server.4.3.3.78
bos.net.tcp.client.4.3.3.78
devices.common.IBM.atm.rte 4.3.3.77

and now the backups run fine again.

What did I learn?
Always install the latest maintenance available.
The NSM is no longer a black box - I will have to
get my feet wet with AIX.
