Hi,

According to my understanding the situation is like this:

Virtual volume tapes can not be used in the Source Server. Because,
Source Server will not be able to identify the volume as no information
regarding this will be there in the Source Server Database. Source Server's
virtual volume destination is denoted by deviceclass=server only. Source
Server keeps the information about the filespace.

Target Server does not keep the filespace information of the
nodetype=server. The data on the tape can be used upto the extent that this
data can be sent to Source Server when requested. Target Server can
identify the volume in which the requested data is residing and thus Target
Server's TSM database is required to restore the data on the Source Server.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Regards,

Mahesh Prasad

Hi,

While setting up a TSM environment, I came with a couple of questions
concerning Virtual Volumes.
Taken the scenario in which I use a target server to hold a copy
storage pool and database backup.

Can I easily transport the tapes from the library in use by the
target server and check those in into the source server (in case of
catastrophy)?
What is the awareness of the target server about the content of the
storage pool? Is the data on the tapes in any way usable on the
target server? (can it be used to restore, without restoring the TSM
database on the target server?)

Thanks in advance!
