I've personally done a dozen or so upgrades from 3.7.x to 4.1.x over the
past year, almost all on AIX, and almost all were flawless and quick.
Essentally, this is it...

backup db, volhist, devconfig
halt the 3.7.x server
install 4.1.4 (latest 4.1.x patch for AIX)
do a 'dsmserv upgradedb' once 4.1.4 is in
Start up with rc.adsmserv
Re-register licenses with 'reg lic file=<pathname to files>'.

Now, I typically don't work on systems that use the HSM client, so YMMV if
you're using HSM.

You might want to take advantage of the downtime to unload and restore your
TSM database if you have any reason or desire to change or optimize the
database. Unless your database is more than a few GB, this process is
relatively quick, allows you to consolidate database files, etc. If you
want more info, drop me a line off the list.
