This was just a guess. From here I cannot be familiar with all details for
your particular environment.
Sorry for the wrong attempt.
Just another thing - upgrade price:
S/390 is very dissimilar to other platforms so I cannot be sure how is
there.
At the same time for RS/6000 and WinNT in the purchase price is included
one year maintenance contract. This gives you the right to receive any new
version marketed within that period.
For example we bought TSM v4.1 and within the maintenance are eligible for
v4.2 as well. Even if v5.0 becomes available within the maintenance period
we ought to get it too.
After expiration of this period additional maintenance can be bought.

Thank you for the detailed explaination and links.

However, I have to disagree on one of your points.

The server (neither my TSM or the W2K box) has not changed any time
recently. The only thing that changed on this client was the client,
going from 4.1.2 to 4.2. UNICODE has always been active.

Again, thank you for your response.

Zoltan,

Your posts ARE getting through. But you cannot force anybody to answer you
you can ask your colleagues for help hoping that they would. If someone
CAN help and WANTS to help you will get some answer based on his/her
expertise.
At least I got all your mailings even the re-post.

Trying to answer to your UNICODE question:
Most probably your problem is caused not by UNICODE but by server upgrade.
In this list we have seen many posting about DB and STGPOOL usage growing
after upgrade with appropriate corrective actions suggested in answers.
Try
them and see will this help.
Also try the latest-latest client "final Golden Edition of the V4.2.0
Windows client" dated 15-th of July.

According to Tivoli statements
(http://www.tivoli.com/support/storage_mgr/compatibility.html):
"Data that has been backed up from a Tivoli Storage Manager
Version
4.2 client to any Tivoli Storage Manager server can be restored using a
Tivoli Storage Manager Version 4.1 client, with the exceptions of the
Windows Version 4.2 client and any Version 4.2 clients using encryption. "
"A Tivoli Storage Manager Version 4.2 client can perform backup,
restore, archive and retrieve functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager
Version
4.1 server. "
BUT be aware that for the latest v4.2.0 client there is a strict statement
(ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/client/v4r2/Windows/WinNT/v420/TSM420GA_READ1STC.TXT)
:
" - Data that has been backed up or archived from this V4.2 Tivoli
Storage
Manager client cannot be restored or retrieved to any previous level
client, regardless of the server level. The data must be restored or
retrieved by a 4.2.0 level or higher client."

Subject: TSM 4.2 client and UNICODE

I haven't gotten any responses to this message, so maybe it got lost !!!!

Any suggestions from anyone, on what to do ?

If I go back to 4.1.3, what about what was backed up with 4.2.0 ?

*****************************************************************************************

I was just bitten by the UNICODE issue ("fioScanDirEntry(): Can't map
object") with the TSM 4.2 client and a W2K server client. I did not
realize there was a requirement to use the 4.2 client that also required
the 4.2 server (no, I cannot install the TSM 4.2 server on OS390. Since it
is a COST upgrade, I could not justfy it. The only way I got to 4.1.3 was
because 3.1 had long expired).

In fact, I thing the UNICODE issue has caused this client to go from 4-5GB
backup to over 20GB (I canceled it after I saw all the errors in the
DSMERROR.LOG file as well as the numerous blank and screwy entries in the
DSMSCHED.LOG file).

No, I can not ask the server owner to turn off UNICODE support since this
is a university (note the "versity" part, as in "diversity").

Any way to get around this issue ? So far, the only thing I can figure
is going back to the 4.1.3 client.
