Stan,
        I have minimal experience with 3590 B11's. If this is what you
have, you may want to verify the volumes in the library are correctly
reflected in the devconfg.file. It shoud look something like the following:

DEFINE DEVCLASS 3590_CLASS DEVTYPE=3590 FORMAT=DRIVE
MOUNTLIMIT=DRIVES MOUNTWAIT=60 MOUNTRETENTION=60
PREFIX=ADSM LIBRARY=3590B11

DEFINE DEVCLASS FILE DEVTYPE=FILE MAXCAPACITY=4096K MOUNTLIMIT=1
DIRECTORY=/usr/lpp/adsmserv/bin
DEFINE LIBRARY 3590B11 LIBTYPE=SCSI DEVICE=/dev/rmt0.smc
DEFINE DRIVE 3590B11 RMT0 DEVICE=/dev/rmt0 ELEMENT=16 ONLINE=Yes
/* LIBRARYINVENTORY SCSI 3590B11 HP0042 37 101*/
/* LIBRARYINVENTORY SCSI 3590B11 HP0044 33 101*/
/* LIBRARYINVENTORY SCSI 3590B11 HP0076 36 101*/
/* LIBRARYINVENTORY SCSI 3590B11 HP0077 32 101*/
/* LIBRARYINVENTORY SCSI 3590B11 HP0224 35 101*/
/* LIBRARYINVENTORY SCSI 3590B11 HP0824 34 101*/

The 5th field is th volume number (ex: HP0042)

You can also change the define the library as manual instead of scsi and
mount the tape in the drive manually.
